Leather curb chains with a curved plate running through the middle. The curve follows the chin groove and because of the length of the plate, it can not be over-tightened like a traditional metal curb chain. With it being a rigid curve it places a little more pressure than a flexible leather curb chain on the chin but without having a vice-like action hence once the curb rein is applied the horse is able to respond to light rein pressure in the mouth before the curb pressure engages encouraging the horse to be lighter and more responsive. Too tight a curb chain and the horse does not receive a rewarding release. Too loose a curb chain and the horse gets pressure too hard and too late from the curb chain. The idea of the use of the curve chain is to get the horse from leaning on the rider’s hands instead of going down the route of using more severe bits in the mouth.
